Criticism/Scholarly Journal
Art is an idea that is way past the personal life of the artist. Instead, it should dwell with the technicalities of the art and not the artist, unless it relates to the image of the painting.
“In short music criticism has turned into lifestyle reporting” (Gioia 1).
“On a few occasions, a reviewer might mention the instruments involved in the making of an album” (Gioia 1).

“The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock” (p. 1033) by T.S. Eliot

The Love Songs talks about a man’s insecurities, this parallels with art during that time that’s get critiqued heavily, when passing the unconventional bounds. However, after a brief period, it begins to be appreciated for it’s uniqueness, similar to Elliot’s social life.

“In the room, women come and go. Talking of Michelangelo” ( 13-14, 1034).
“I know the voices dying within a dying fall: beneath the music from a farther room” (52-53, 1035).

“Videotape” (p. 1090)
The videotape answers how art is used in societies and the very meaning that it carries in society. Also, the short story reflects more of a darker side to an artful form of recording.

“Because once the tapes rolling it can only end one way” (DeLilo 1094).
“There’s a joke locked away here, a cruel slapstick that you are willing to appreciate even if it makes you feel a little guilty” (DeLilo 1094).
Piano Poem  (D.H. Lawerence)
The poem attributes to describing the art form of music and how it can bring someone back to their emotional past. It allows for reminiscence on their personality, and discover who they truly are.

“Betrays me luck, till the heart of me weeps” ( Line 6, 1111)
“Of childish days is upon me, my manhood is cast” ( Line 11, 1111)
The Blues Poem ( Billy Collins)
The poem tends to describe the power of art and how it has a high potential to tap into the deep emotions, despite a person’s sense of personality. All people give themselves to art, regardless of who they are.

“You’re a hard headed man but that woman’s sure going to make you cry” (Line 24. 1116)
“Which will now lift you higher” (Line 12, 1116)
Where are you going, Where have you been? By Joyce Carol Oates
The passage discusses about the incorporation of music to someone’s daily life, therefore supporting the effect that music has on the tempo of lifestyle in different countries. Each person lives their life to a different beat.

“The music was always in the background like music at a church service, it was something to depend upon” (Oates 469).
“A feeling mixed up with the urgent insistent pounding of the music, “(Oates 470).
The Negro Artist and the Racial Mountain by Langston Hughes
The nonfiction essay shows the one sided nature of art, as race is trying to underrepresent itself. Therefore, it shows that music has lost pieces in the puzzle, without the input of diversity.

“We build our temples for tomorrow, strong as we know how, and we stand on top of the mountain, free within ourselves” (Hughes 1299).
“He is taught rather not to see it, or if he does, to be ashamed of when it is not according to Caucasian patterns” (Hughes 1299).
“The Guitarist” by Picasso
The guitarist by Picasso shows the gloomy atmosphere that music is able to create. It is making a statement that art has the power to create mood.
